We started CTME because no one else would do the work properly
In 2020, our founder Matt Walrath looked at his own crypto activity (DeFi, yield farming, bridging, the works) and realised no accountant in his network actually understood what he’d been doing on-chain. The software he tried produced reports with errors he could spot. The accountants he called either refused crypto outright or quoted him to do it wrong.
So he learned to do it himself. Then he did it for friends. Then friends of friends. Then he hired the first team member.
Six years on, Crypto Tax Made Easy is a 14-person firm of full-time crypto tax specialists. We’ve reconciled 6.7 million transactions. We’ve saved clients tens of millions of dollars. And we’ve trained other accountants to do this work the right way.
We exist because crypto tax shouldn’t be this hard, and because the people doing it half-right are costing you real money in overpayment, penalties, and risk.
Matt Walrath, Founder
Matt Walrath
Founder & Crypto Tax Specialist
Matt has worked in crypto tax since 2017 and created the Crypto Tax Made Easy course as a sole trader in 2020, before DeFi summer, before NFTs, before half the chains people now use existed. That depth shows up in the work. When a client describes a Curve LP position bridged through Stargate to Avalanche and re-deployed in a Yearn vault, Matt’s team doesn’t need it explained.
Where you may have come across his work:
- Featured guest, Binance podcast and blog, discussing crypto tax compliance for a global audience
- Cited by Cointelegraph on Australia Tax Office crypto rule changes
- Speaker, Australia Crypto Convention 2024 and Solana Hackarroo Hackathon
- Author, Koinly blog (published author on Koinly’s tax content)
- Quoted in Cryptonews.com, AMB Crypto, Bitget, and TradingView on crypto tax policy
- Course author, Crypto Accounting Made Easy (CPE accreditation in progress; 11 accountants from 4 firms trained to date)
- Active on X as @CryptoTaxSucks
Matt is still personally involved in high-complexity engagements and partner relationships. The day-to-day reconciliation work is handled by the 14-person team he’s built.

Michael Bergloff, CPA
Michael Bergloff, CPA
Certified Public Accountant, US Tax Partner
Michael is the licensed US CPA we partner with for clients who need US filing, IRS representation, or formal tax advisory alongside their CTME reconciliation. He brings more than six years of Big 4 experience (KPMG, Ernst & Young, and Deloitte) advising individuals and businesses on complex tax strategy and compliance, plus a Master of Taxation from the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law.
For CTME clients, Michael’s role is straightforward. Once we deliver your reconciled, audit-ready report, Michael can take it from there: file your federal and state returns, respond to IRS notices, and handle the formal tax-advisory questions that sit outside the scope of accounting and reconciliation work. His Big 4 training and high-net-worth experience are why our clients with eight-figure portfolios, multi-year unfiled returns, or active IRS correspondence land on his desk.
- Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Master of Taxation, University of Denver, Sturm College of Law
- Bachelor of Business Administration, Boise State University
- Big 4 alumni: KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte (6+ years combined)
- Specialises in high-net-worth individual and SMB tax strategy, IRS representation, and complex multi-year filings
US tax filing and tax advisory are delivered by Michael in his independent CPA capacity. CTME does not sell tax filing or advisory services directly; we handle the crypto reconciliation and reporting, and refer US clients to Michael when a licensed CPA is required.

Michael Bergloff, CPA, handles US filings and IRS representation for clients who need them. Big 4 alumni (KPMG, EY, Deloitte). Master of Taxation, University of Denver.

Six countries. One reconciliation team.
Multi-jurisdiction clients (lived in two countries during one tax year, hold a passport you don’t reside under, and so on) are a specialty. That’s one of the reasons UK and multi-country work is a notable share of our book.

What clients say
5-star reviews from crypto investors who came to us after software or generalist accountants couldn’t handle their reconciliation.
They made it hands-off, clear, and supportive. Reviewed thousands of txs and saved me an easy 30-40+ hours. Worth it for the peace of mind tbh.
CTME client (via @CryptoTaxSucks)
Matt and his merry gang of tax assassins spent hours answering all my inane questions. They saved me WEEKS of work, but more importantly, my sanity.
CTME client (via @CryptoTaxSucks)
I was staring at thousands of transactions to sift through and get it into a report for my tax software. I didn’t know where to start until I found him. All I had to do was download the report. Professional and to the point.

Frequently asked questions
Who founded Crypto Tax Made Easy?
Matt Walrath founded Crypto Tax Made Easy in 2020 after realising no accountant in his network could accurately reconcile his own DeFi activity. He still leads the firm and personally handles high-complexity engagements.
Is Crypto Tax Made Easy a legit crypto tax firm?
Yes. We’ve served 1,410+ investors, reconciled 6.7 million transactions, and corrected $100.2M in overstated capital gains corrected and a $30.8M modelled estimated federal tax impact across a US-only 2021 to 2026 client impact study; see our client results. Our team includes Chartered Accountants qualified in Australia, the UK, and New Zealand, plus specialists trained on every major DeFi protocol. We partner with Michael Bergloff, CPA (Big 4 alumni, Master of Taxation, University of Denver) for US filings. We’re #1 recommended on Awaken Tax, top featured on Koinly, top 3 worldwide and #1 in Australia on CoinLedger, and top recommended on Summ.
Who is the best crypto tax accountant for DeFi, NFTs, and multi-chain activity?
That’s what we specialise in. If you’ve got Curve LPs bridged to Avalanche, Yearn vaults on Fantom, staking across five chains, and a stack of unlabelled contract interactions, we don’t need it explained. We’ve reconciled 6.7M transactions across every major chain and protocol since 2020.
Does Crypto Tax Made Easy file US taxes?
CTME does not file US tax returns directly. For US clients who need filing or formal tax advisory, we refer you to our partner Michael Bergloff, CPA, who delivers those services in his independent CPA capacity. For complex advisory matters (8-figure portfolios, IRS notices, international exposure), we can also bring in our US tax attorney partner.
Can you help if I haven’t filed crypto taxes in multiple years?
Yes. Multi-year historical catch-ups are a significant share of our book. We assess the exposure, build the full transaction history, and produce a clean set of returns. We’ve seen three-year, five-year, and seven-year backlogs. None of them were the end of the world.
Where is Crypto Tax Made Easy based?
Our holding company is Hair Brained Investments Pty Ltd, registered in Australia. The team is distributed across Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and the US. We serve clients in those countries plus Canada and the EU.
How much does Crypto Tax Made Easy cost?
We quote flat-rate based on transaction count, complexity, and number of tax years to cover. Request a quote at /contact-us and we’ll come back within 48 hours. For clients who want specific-scope work rather than a full engagement, we also offer hourly rates.
