Who needs us

Who needs a crypto accountant in Australia

You probably do not need a full-service crypto accountant if you bought one parcel of BTC on an Australian exchange, held it, and sold once. A registered tax agent or even myTax handles that. A crypto accountant earns the fee when one or more of these is true:

  • You traded across multiple exchanges and self-custody wallets. CoinSpot, Swyftx, Binance, Kraken, plus MetaMask and a Ledger, and the CSV exports do not tie out.
  • You used DeFi. Uniswap, Aave, GMX, Pendle, liquidity pools, perpetuals. Anywhere your single “transaction” is actually four on-chain events the software could not label.
  • You bridged assets across chains. USDC on Ethereum and USDC on Arbitrum look like two different assets to most software, which then invents a disposal you never made.
  • You earned staking, mining, or airdrop income the ATO treats as ordinary assessable income at its AUD market value on the day you received it, and your software either missed it or used the wrong AUD price.
  • You have unlodged years or you received an ATO crypto data-matching letter or a “please explain” prompt about a disposal you did not report.
  • You have a large gain that needs strategy: reviewing disposal dates against the pre-1 July 2027 CGT discount rules, the new post-2027 CGT reform rules, and any prior capital losses, or sorting out whether you are an investor or a trader.
  • You hold crypto in an SMSF and need calculations that satisfy both the ATO and your fund auditor.
Why this matters now: The ATO runs a cryptocurrency data-matching program that collects records from Australian exchanges on up to 1.2 million people, and Australia has committed to the OECD Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), which widens exchange reporting further. They have your data. The question is whether the version on your return matches.
ATO-ready output

What you actually receive

The deliverable is a tax-ready report your accountant or registered tax agent can lodge straight into your return.

We do not lodge your return. We give you the tax-ready report. You hand it to your accountant or registered tax agent. If you do not have one, we will introduce you to our Australian tax agent partner, who lodges and deals with the ATO in their own registered capacity.

Accountant vs tax agent

Crypto accountant vs registered tax agent: what is the difference?

People search both. Here is the honest distinction in the Australian system:

  • A registered tax agent is registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) and is the only person who can lodge your tax return for a fee and represent you with the ATO.
  • A crypto accountant is a specialist who reconciles your on-chain and exchange activity into correct CGT and income figures. The expertise is in DeFi reconciliation, cost base edge cases, the investor-versus-trader question, and cleaning up software the generalist firm down the road has never had to touch.

What most Australian crypto investors actually need is both, in sequence: a crypto accountant who builds the report, and a tax agent (yours or our Australian partner) who lodges it. The reconciliation is the harder, more specialised half. We do that part. Lodgement is your tax agent’s job.

Financial year 2025-26

The ATO crypto rules you actually need to know

The Australian financial year runs 1 July to 30 June. Self-lodgers file by 31 October; lodging through a registered tax agent usually buys you longer.

Crypto is a CGT asset, not currency Selling, swapping one coin for another, spending, or gifting crypto is each a CGT event. Buying with AUD and holding is not, and moving coins between your own wallets is not.
The CGT discount and 2027 reform For eligible investor disposals before 1 July 2027, holding a CGT asset for more than 12 months can still make only half the gain assessable. From 1 July 2027, Tax Reform No. 1 changes the calculation for later gains, so disposal timing now needs a separate review.
No separate CGT rate Your net capital gain is added to your assessable income and taxed at marginal rates: nil to $18,200, then 16%, 30%, 37%, and 45% above $190,000, plus the 2% Medicare levy.
Personal use asset exemption Narrow. If crypto costing under $10,000 is genuinely used to buy goods or services for personal use, the gain may be exempt. Crypto held as an investment does not qualify, even if you occasionally spend it.
ATO data-matching The ATO collects transaction data from Australian exchanges on up to 1.2 million people and cross-references it against returns. A mismatch triggers an automated letter.
CARF is coming Australia has committed to the OECD Crypto Asset Reporting Framework, which expands the data exchanges must report. The window for quietly catching up on old years is closing.
If you have already had an ATO data-matching letter or a “please explain” about a disposal, the ATO has the exchange records. The fix is a correct reconciliation and, where needed, a voluntary disclosure before penalties build. We have helped Australian clients reconcile and amend in exactly this situation.
Where software fails

DeFi, NFTs, staking, and memecoin complexity

These are where automated software falls over. They are also where an Australian crypto accountant earns the fee.

  • Liquidity pools. Depositing into a pool can be a disposal of the tokens you put in, and withdrawing can be a reacquisition. Software treats the LP token as a single line and gets the cost base wrong. We split it correctly per pool.
  • Staking rewards. Assessable as ordinary income at the AUD market value on the day you receive them, and that value becomes the cost base for the later CGT event. Software either double counts or misses it. We reconcile by source contract.
  • Cross-chain bridges. The ATO has not issued specific guidance, and in many practitioners’ view bridging the same asset is not a disposal. Software often treats it as one, inflates your gain, and you overpay unless someone corrects it.
  • NFTs. Gas paid to mint is part of the cost base, not a separate event. Creator royalties are ordinary income. Flips are CGT events like any other disposal.
  • Memecoin trading. Thousands of swaps on Solana or Base, failed transactions, bot interactions, rug-pulled tokens. We strip the noise and reconcile what actually mattered for tax.
  • Airdrops. For an initial allocation airdrop the ATO treatment differs from a reward or promotional airdrop, where the AUD market value at receipt is assessable income. Getting the category right changes the bill.

So what do we do about it? We use the same software you have already paid for, such as Koinly, then our team manually fixes what it got wrong. The output is an ATO-ready capital gains and income report plus a reconciliation backup your tax agent can rely on. For the full rules, read our Australian crypto tax guide.

SMSF crypto

Holding crypto in a Self-Managed Super Fund

An SMSF can hold cryptocurrency, but the compliance bar is high and the audit is annual. The common breaches are avoidable with the right records.

  • Ownership and storage. The crypto must be held in the fund’s name, in a wallet controlled by the trustees and kept separate from any personal holdings.
  • Investment strategy and sole purpose. The fund’s documented investment strategy must allow crypto, and the holding must meet the sole purpose test of providing retirement benefits.
  • Valuation and CGT. Holdings are valued at market value for the fund’s annual return. Capital gains in accumulation phase are taxed at 15%, reduced to an effective 10% where the asset was held more than 12 months.

We prepare SMSF crypto calculations that satisfy both the ATO and your fund auditor, and we are happy to work alongside your fund administrator.

Lodgement options

Working with your accountant, or with our Australian tax agent partner

Two paths.

A

You already have an accountant

We deliver a complete, tax-ready report: capital gains summary with the 50% discount applied, income summary, and reconciliation backup. Your accountant or tax agent lodges it. We coordinate with them on classification questions if anything needs clarifying.

B

You need a crypto-savvy tax agent too

For clients who need lodgement and ATO representation, we refer you to our Australian registered tax agent partner, who delivers those services in their own registered capacity, lodges the return, and handles ATO correspondence.

Important: Referrals are coordinated through CTME so your reconciliation file flows straight to the tax agent without you having to re-explain your situation.

Client reviews

Reviews from Australian crypto traders and investors

5-star reviews from investors who came to us after software or a generalist accountant could not handle their reconciliation.

★★★★★

I was completely lost and genuinely stressing. Handing the whole mess of my crypto investing over to Matt and his team was the best decision I have made. Just the peace of mind was worth it.

David L., Verified Client

★★★★★

I thought I had it sorted, but my accountant came back with a tax bill way higher than expected. A mate recommended CTME. They reviewed my last two years and found a stack of allowable losses my accountant had missed. The corrected report cut my liability by a lot. It paid for itself.

Corey, Verified Client

★★★★★

Reports from the tax software were a joke. I knew they were wrong but had no time to fix them. The team at CTME went through it and fixed the lot. A massive help.

Common questions

Australian crypto accountant FAQs

How is cryptocurrency taxed in Australia?

The ATO treats crypto as a CGT asset. Selling, swapping, spending, or gifting it triggers Capital Gains Tax. For eligible investor disposals before 1 July 2027, a crypto asset held for more than 12 months can still qualify for the 50% CGT discount. From 1 July 2027, Tax Reform No. 1 changes the calculation for later gains, so the disposal date matters. Crypto earned as income, such as staking or some airdrops, is taxed at your marginal rate on its AUD value when you receive it.

What is the 12-month CGT discount?

For eligible investor disposals before 1 July 2027, holding a crypto asset for at least 12 months and one day before disposing of it can mean only 50% of the capital gain is included in assessable income. From 1 July 2027, Tax Reform No. 1 changes the calculation for later gains. We track the acquisition date and disposal date of every parcel across every wallet and exchange so the right rules are applied.

Does the ATO know about my crypto?

Almost certainly. The ATO runs a cryptocurrency data-matching program that collects records from Australian exchanges covering up to 1.2 million people, and it cross-references that data against tax returns. If you have disposed of crypto and not reported it, the ATO likely already has the records.

Does Binance report to the ATO?

Yes. Binance, along with Australian exchanges such as CoinSpot and Swyftx, provides data to the ATO under its cryptocurrency data-matching program, which collects records covering up to 1.2 million people. The ATO matches that exchange data against your tax return, so any disposal you do not report can trigger an automated discrepancy letter. From 2027 the OECD Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) will widen this reporting further. Assume the ATO already has your exchange history and make sure your return matches it.

How much does a crypto tax accountant cost in Australia?

It depends on transaction volume and complexity. Every engagement is a fixed quote scoped to your actual history, and most clients save multiples of the fee through correct application of the CGT discount where it still applies, the 2027 reform rules where relevant, offset losses, and accurate cost base calculations. Request a free, no-obligation quote.

Can I hold crypto in my SMSF?

Yes, but the rules are strict. The crypto must be held in the fund’s name in a separate trustee-controlled wallet, the investment strategy must allow it, and it is valued at market value annually. Capital gains in accumulation phase are taxed at 15%, or an effective 10% if held more than 12 months. We prepare SMSF calculations that satisfy both the ATO and your fund auditor.

Are staking and airdrop rewards taxable?

Staking rewards are assessable income at their AUD market value on the day you receive them, and that value becomes the cost base for the later CGT event when you dispose of them. Airdrops depend on the type: a reward or promotional airdrop is generally assessable income at receipt, while an initial allocation airdrop is treated differently. We classify each correctly.

Is moving crypto between my own wallets a taxable event?

No. Transferring crypto between wallets you own is not a CGT event because there is no change of beneficial ownership. The cost base carries across. Problems only arise when software misreads a transfer as a disposal, which inflates your gain. Reconciling these correctly is a core part of what we do.

What if I have not declared crypto on past returns?

You can fix it. We reconcile the affected years and, where needed, prepare a voluntary disclosure through your tax agent before penalties and interest build. The ATO treats taxpayers who come forward voluntarily far more favourably than those it catches through data-matching.
